Safe Routes to School Resources

The California Safe Routes to School Technical Assistance Resource Center, a Program of the California Active Communities, within the University of California San Francisco in Partnership with the California Department of Public Health, has partnered with SafeTREC to develop interactive geospatial PDF planning maps for each city and county in California.  Maps provide a visual depiction of schools, including school closures and school district boundaries, street-level pedestrian and bicycle collisions, school free and reduced price meal eligibility, and past state and federal Safe Routes to School grant awards.  The geospatial PDF feature allows schools or collisions in the map to be identified and the relevant data table displayed within the PDF.  Map layers can also be turned on and off depending on the information needed to be viewed.  These maps serve as a useful resource to assist communities in SRTS planning.  A summary table which includes pedestrian and bicycle collision count rankings for the state and for each county has also been provided.  Collision counts are shown for total collisions as well as for total collisions for schools designated as low income only.  Maps and geospatial PDF features can be viewed in Adobe 9 Reader or higher.

About the maps

A map has been created for each city in the state as well as for each county's unincorporated areas.  In some cases, for larger cities and counties, multiple maps have been created and identified by approximate regions in the list.  Maps show injury or fatality involved pedestrian and bicycle collisions (all ages of victims) from the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) from 2007 to 2009 that were able to be geocoded.  These maps can be a key resource for selecting schools for SRTS projects.

School free and reduced price meal eligibility is from October 2010 and is compiled by the California Department of Education.  SRTS award funding status has been compiled by SRTS TARC and includes federal and state infrastructure and non-infrastructure funded projects. 

Maps are intended as an informational resource to assist communities with SRTS planning. Maps should not be used as the sole criteria for selecting SRTS schools or projects. Summary table

A summary table is provided as an Excel spreadsheet. This table contains summary information for all the schools in the maps.  The table contains a worksheet tab for the entire state and then separate worksheet tabs for each county.

School data field key

The school data field key contains information describing each of the data fields available for the schools in the PDF maps and summary table.  The document shows for each field the long name, short variable name, description and range of possible values

Maps are listed by city or county for unincorporated areas.  Click the 'Download' link next to each name to view the map in a PDF in the web browser or right-click the link and 'Save Link As' to download the PDF to your computer.
